Field Observation Report: Bee fauna of the Owen Stanley Ranges
1. Species Observation Details
-
Location: Owen Stanley Ranges, Papua New Guinea, Kokoda Trail
- Date: June 29, 2026
- Altitude: 300 - 2,100m+ (Nests appear to favor higher altitudes 1500m +)
2. Behavior (Apis spp.)
- Total Sightings: 4 sightings of wild honeybees across the Owen Stanley Ranges.
- Nesting Sites: 2 wild nests observed in tree hollows of Southern Beech (Nothofagus). 1 nest observed inside a home cavity in the Highlands region.
- Swarming Activity: 1 live migratory swarm observed. Large size and clear, directional flight pattern indicate migratory behavior.
- Morphology & Characteristics: Small body size with distinct bands on the thorax, highly consistent with tropical honeybee morphology.
- Temperament & Ecology: Active pollen collection was evident. Wild honeybees were active in native pollination of the Owen Stanley Ranges.
