In Season 1 Colony Bees worked on a special collaboration to create a Bee Sanctuary in Byron Bay on Bundjalung land.
The design used a Top Bar Kenyan hive and architectural design principals to create a exceptional garden landscape, that was to become a energy centre for the bee.
A place of observation and learning, the Sanctuary became an important place for new and aspiring guardians, who can watch the seasonal patterns of behaviour within the hive.
The design of this garden was to maximise connectivity between residents of hive and home through sound acoustics and the observation of entrance activity such as the sight of pollen being collected and returned on the legs of foragers.
These important aspects were developed through ongoing hive care services to the Sanctuary which was maintained for 2 seasons.
Since then the nest has successfully cast two swarms, contributing to the rewilding and naturalisation of the honeybee and the pollination of Bundjalung country.
