Freedom Day, Karungkarini country.
In 2022, we joined with family and friends from the Little Rocket team to commemorate the Wave Hill walk off. The celebration was opened with ceremonial dancing, music and spoken words from community elders.
We had the opportunity to explore the art gallery where we even discovered a short film 'Ngarlu' on traditional sugarbag hunting in the community.
Big red found its feet on the red dirt as we travelled from Darwin south through Katherine and out west to Karungkarini country.
Gurindji Freedom Day Festival - August 22nd, 23rd & 24th 2025
The Gurindji Freedom Day Festival commemorates the iconic events of the 1966 Wave Hill Walk Off. A storey of epic bravery.
On August 23rd 1966, two hundred Gurindji, Mudburra and Walpiri people took a stand against injustice. Led by Vincent Lingiari, this action sparked a movement. The iconic image of Whitlam pouring sand into Vincent’s hand continues to be a symbol of unity and inspiration for all.
